Although I've been happy with Latina Christiana, Connor is bored with the format and irritated with the religious content. (I can't blame him - we're using so many Catholic resources that my kids are going to grow up wondering why we're not at mass.) So yesterday we began using Latin For Children. Connor says he likes it better; I'm on the fence. No, really, it's fine, I just wish he liked LC better.
The DVDs are hard to hear. The chants are cutesy, almost annoyingly so. Some we did, some we just laughed at. They do get into your head, though.
I like that it moves more quickly with grammar. I like that it introduces the four principal verb parts immediately.
Connor likes that it uses the classical pronounciation. Traitor. Using the classical pronounciation makes me feel like Elmer Fudd. Be wery wery quiet. I'm hunting Gauls! Aidan has asked to stick with Prima and LC, so I'll have to remember to switch back and forth, as best I can.
Connor is going to hate Henle. Sniff.
In my personal Latin study, I am deep in the bowels of the subjunctive, lesson 23 or 24 or something like that. Purpose clauses. Tricksy things, all these tenses, especially when Fr. Henle suddenly throws in past passive indicative whatsits when I'm expecting a nice active perfect tense that I can follow up in an appropriate form in a purpose clause. Did your brain hurt reading that? I'm making progress, slowly.
This was our second day of Normal Life. Normal Life begins with Mom up by 7 to exercise, followed by kids up by 8 and studies beginning promptly at 9. When we do this (this is the important part!) we're finished by lunchtime. And that's how we all like it. I'm exhausted and tapped out by the late afternoon, though. Must figure out how to prevent that. Right now we're all up too late, with pounding sinuses and coughs, and rain on the way; so maybe we'll ditch the schedule, sleep in and watch movies all day. We'll see. Normal Life takes a lot out of a person.

Hi! Found you by way of AHA Weblogs. Regarding Latin, have you looked into Minimus? It is Latin geared toward children in a comic book format.
It's not cheap, but you can find it used on Ebay and Amazon.

Hi Natalie! Actually, I have Minimus and my older son loves it. It doesn't provide enough systematic grammar for me to feel comfortable using it as our only Latin, so we use it as a fun supplement. Cambridge Latin Course (which is what Minimus feeds into .... or is it the Oxford Latin? I haven't had my coffee yet.) would probably be a good fit for my son in the future. He would love the format. It will drive me nuts ;-) I love Henle, even with the heavy religious content. But part of the point of this whole homeschooling thing is that we all learn differently ...

We started off slowly over a year ago with English from the Roots Up to gauge dd's interest. I'll look into both the Cambridge and Oxford Latin, but I think that once we work through Minimus, DD13 will want to start Spanish (real, conversational, emersion Spanish...now *that* is going to drive me nuts.)
Glad I found your blog!
